I chose Benjamin Benmoyal for his breathtaking craftsmanship and innovative use of recycled cassette tapes in weaving. An esteemed graduate of Central Saint Martins, London, he is the creative force behind his self-titled brand, established in 2020.
Benjamin’s successful career was initiated with the LVMH Grand Prix Scholarship and continued with invaluable experiences at Alexander McQueen and Hermès. As a French-Israeli and former parachute commando, Benjamin seeks to reclaim his lost naivety through his innovative designs. His work is a stunning blend of his French-Israeli heritage and Moroccan roots, evident in his voluminous and effortless designs.
Benjamin’s dedication to experimentation through traditional craft techniques is both inspiring and visionary. His garments are woven entirely from VHS tapes of his cherished childhood cartoons. After extensive development, Benjamin has perfected the industrial creation of these unique fabrics, utilising solely recycled audio and video tapes.
When looking at his designs, I am struck by his inspiration drawn from the brutalist, utopian, and optimistic architecture of the 1960s. His commitment to weaving and unique materials sets him apart, creating pieces that are as thoughtful as they are beautiful. Benjamin Benmoyal’s designs are more than fashion; they are a testament to the power of creativity and heritage, reimagined through a modern lens.
