Brazilian designer, Joao Maraschin is a rising star. He has already been featured in Vogue Brazil as one of the most important emerging designers to watch. Living and working from his base in London, Joao recently showcased his SS22 collection at London Fashion Week and had a 10-piece collection at the Corner Shop space at Selfridge’s on Oxford Street as part of the Reture partnership last month.
Sustainability is the starting point and the only way forward at Joao Maraschin’s eponymous label. Being sustainable is non-negotiable and sustainability is at the core of each decision made. Some of adjectives that paint the picture of where he’s is going are: ‘care, respect, connect, support, collaborate and exchange, protect, preserve, sustain, create, learn, bridge, cherish, enrich and give back.
But Maraschin is much more than just sustainability; he also happens to be one of the most unique, innovative and exciting young designers working in the sustainable field today. The collections embrace and preserve handmade techniques like crochet and embroidery, and also work with new discoveries and raw materials, in a bid to explore circularity waste repair. Maraschin’s human centred designs are also notable for celebrating older women. Both as his muses and key members of his production team. Talking of the team, they have recently done several direct and indirect collaboration projects around the world, with a focus on communities in the UK, Brazil and Africa. Maraschin makes sure to visit each community in person, as well as all of the suppliers, so that he can guarantee full transparency and traceability. Education is another important pillar that is woven into the brand philosophy. Maraschin himself gets involved in mentorship programmes and government projects in the UK, as well as creating small creative hubs in Brazil where he can help protect the longevity of traditional handmade techniques and foster skill development for younger generations.
I simply adore this designer. Perhaps it is because we share a strong view that women do not need to suddenly become invisible after 40. Regardless, his ready-to-wear and made to order pieces are all empowering, and perfectly express the bravery and boldness of women of all ages.
